Society Information

The American Society of Biomechanics (ASB) was founded in October 1977. The purpose of the Society is to provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among researchers in biomechanics. The term biomechanics is used here to mean the study of the structure and function of biological systems using the methods of mechanics.

The European Society of Biomechanics (ESB) was founded at a meeting of 20 scientists from 11 countries in Brussels on May 21, 1976. The participants decided to create a new society, the European Society of Biomechanics. The primary goal of the ESB was formulated as "To encourage, foster, promote and develop research, progress and information concerning the science of Biomechanics.

The International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) was formed to promote the study of all areas of biomechanics at the international level, although special emphasis is given to the biomechanics of Human Movement. The Society encourages international contacts amongst scientists, promotes the dissemination of knowledge, and forms liaisons with national organizations.

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Biomechanics (ANZSB) was founded in February 1996 to be a forum for biomechanists from all variety of disciplines, or areas of study, within Australia and New Zealand, to meet and communicate. There are many areas in biomechanics including, for example, motor control, cardiovascular and respiratory biomechanics, rehabilitation biomechanics, sport biomechanics, bone and hard tissue biomechanics, connective tissue biomechanics, orthopaedic biomechanics, and cellular and molecular biomechanics, to name just some. We hope that ANZSB will be a forum for all areas of biomechanics to exchange ideas and experience.

ABOUT THE JOURNAL OF BIOMECHANICS

Journal of Biomechanics publishes reports of original and substantial findings using the principles of mechanics to explore biological problems. Analytical and experimental papers may be submitted, and the journal accepts original articles, surveys and perspective articles (usually by Editorial invitation only), book reviews and letters to the Editor. The criteria for acceptance of manuscripts include excellence, novelty, significance, clarity, conciseness and interest to the readership.
